Sri Lankan Forces Escalate Violent Crackdown on Tamil Self-Determination Protests

The National Council of Canadian Tamils condemns intensified state violence against peaceful Tamil protesters in Sri Lanka's North and East provinces. Recent incidents highlight a dangerous pattern of suppression that threatens regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Timeline of State Violence Against Tamil Protesters

A series of violent crackdowns by Sri Lankan security forces has targeted Tamil civilians exercising their fundamental right to protest in their traditional homeland.

January 2023 Incidents

On January 15, 2023, Sri Lankan security forces violently disrupted peaceful Tamil protests during the Sri Lankan President's visit to Jaffna to mark Thai Pongal. Forces erected barricades and deployed water cannons against demonstrators.

Three days later, on January 18, 2023, authorities arrested Tamil civil society leader Velan Swamigal, who had participated in the peaceful protest against the President's visit.

February Escalation

From February 4 to 7, 2023, Sri Lankan security forces intensified their suppression tactics, using intimidation, surveillance, and other coercive measures to prevent Tamil people from participating in the peaceful North to East protest march. This march rejected Sri Lanka's 75th Independence Day, as February 4 is considered a "black day" for Tamil people and marked as Tamil Nation Occupied Day.

The violence escalated further on February 11, 2023, when security forces violently arrested Member of Parliament Selvarajah Kajendran and lawyer Kanagaratnam Sugash, alongside 16 other protesters. Their crime: holding a peaceful black flag protest during the Sri Lankan President's visit to Jaffna.

Fundamental Rights Under Attack

Right to protest is a fundamental human right. However, in Sri Lanka when Tamil people protest, their right to protest is being increasingly and violently suppressed.

The NCCT urgently calls on the international community to condemn these violent measures and systematic subjugation perpetrated against the Tamil people by Sri Lanka's government.

Decades of Oppression Continue

Even during Sri Lanka's current economic crisis—itself a consequence of seven decades of genocide against Tamil people—the Sri Lankan government continues its military oppression and refuses to recognize the Tamil people's right to self-determination.

Regional Implications

The current trend in Sri Lanka's treatment of Tamil people continues to destabilize the Indo-Pacific region. The NCCT emphasizes that only a permanent political solution to the Tamil National question will bring lasting peace to this strategically important region.

Call for International Action

The National Council of Canadian Tamils urges the international community to:

  • Condemn the violent suppression of peaceful Tamil protests
  • Pressure Sri Lanka to respect fundamental human rights
  • Support the Tamil people's right to self-determination
  • Work toward a permanent political solution to ensure regional stability

The pattern of escalating violence against Tamil civilians exercising their basic rights demands immediate international attention and intervention.
