On April 2, 2026, Peel Regional Police confirmed that a 14-year-old male from Brampton has been arrested and charged following an investigation by Peel Regional Police Hate Crime Unit in connection with the vandalism of the Tamil Genocide Monument on March 20, 2026.

From the outset, the NCCT has emphasized that these repeated acts of hate-motivated vandalism targeting the Tamil Genocide Monument in Chinguacousy Park, Brampton, constitute more than acts of mischief. It is important to clearly recognize and affirm that these were hate motivated acts rooted in Tamil Genocide denial and distortion. The hateful nature of these acts signals a clear and concerning intent to intimidate the Tamil Canadian community and to suppress their rightful ability to commemorate and memorialize the Tamil Genocide freely and without fear.

The classification and investigation of these incidents within a hate crime framework is a significant and necessary step toward holding the perpetrator accountable, achieving justice, and preventing the recurrence of such hate-motivated acts.

NCCT extends its sincere appreciation to Peel Regional Police, particularly the Hate Crime Unit, for their thorough investigation and for recognizing the serious and hate-motivated nature of these acts.

NCCT calls on authorities to continue taking concrete measures to prevent recurrence and to protect the Tamil Genocide Monument—a powerful symbol of remembrance and a vital space for the Tamil Canadian community to commemorate and memorialize the Tamil Genocide.
